It is not about right or wrong

Just then, Ali, the guy whose side I was agreeing with, snapped at me. “It is not about right or wrong; it is do you understand!”

Matthew McConaughey, GREENLIGHTS

I’ve been pondering this scene for weeks now. Until coming across that concept in GREENLIGHTS, I had never considered that disagreements shouldn’t be about right or wrong.

What would disagreements look like if we adopted the do you understand mindset? What if we looked at disagreements as opportunities to understand? We might not agree with one another, but that doesn’t mean we’re doomed to never understand one another.
